Abstract
Natural killer (NK) cells are innate lymphoid cells capable of controlling tumor growth and dissemination. However, tumor cells and the related tissue microenvironment can affect NK cell anti- tumor activities by limiting their infiltration in the tumor mass or by generating hypofunctional/anergic/exhausted NK cells.
We will discuss the major mechanisms governing NK cell immune-escape, while we will focus on a new NK cell subset, identified in solid tumors, endowed with pro-tumor and pro-angiogenic features, namely decidual-like NK cells.
Finally, we will discuss major strategy to re-educate the anti tumor activities of NK cells, in solid cancer, including some drug repurposing approaches.
