Abstract

Pollination is a pivotal ecosystem service which the majority of the food crops depends on. Despite many cultivars have been selected to produce fruit and seeds by self-pollinating, many different studies proved that pollination promoted by insects is able to improve the quantity and the quality of fruit and seeds produced, both at the yield and nutritional point of view. However, most of the studies focused on morphological parameters or at most on nutrients belonging to the primary metabolism. In this work an experimental set-up was built with the aim of investigating the impact of different pollination mechanisms (self-pollination, cross pollination and insect mediated pollination) on the metabolic features of fruit and seeds of two species of agronomic interest, the fleshy “fruit” Fragaria vesca L. and a dry fruit species belonging to the Fabaceae family known as Vigna unguiculata L. Walp. A particular attention is dedicated to the secondary compounds composition of fruit and seeds and variations among treatments with putative impact at the human nutritional level are investigated.
