Conversazione con Nello Cristianini e Stefano Bertacchi, Coordina Gianfranco Pacchioni

We have created a form of Artificial Intelligence, and we have already put it in a position to make decisions for us and about us. In order to be able to coexist safely with it, we must understand how our creatures "think", so as to know what we can expect from them.
The presence of AI agents introduces great opportunities and some risks, which should be managed with the support of different disciplines such as philosophy, economics, law, psychology and computer science.
Is it possible for intelligent machines to do and understand things that we cannot? To make decisions that are harmful to society? To become our competitors for a job?
During the conversation we will discuss:
1) What do we mean by intelligent machines?
2) What are the risks and benefits of using this technology in sensitive domains such as justice, education, finance, and many others?
3) What can be the long-term psychological, social and cultural consequences of the use of content
personalization algorithms?
4) What are social machines? Are we in the presence of machines with "superhuman" intelligence?
5) How can we respond to this new challenge, with an alliance of social, human and natural sciences?
Nello Cristianini is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bath in the UK. His research covers statistical theory of learning machines, natural language processing, the analysis of social media content, and the ethical and social impact of intelligent technologies. He is the author of:
• The Shortcut (why intelligent machines do not think like us) 2023 - CRC Press
• La scorciatoia - come le macchine sono diventate intelligenti senza pensare in modo umano - 2023 - Il Mulino
Coordinator: Prof. Gianfranco Pacchioni
