The Department of Biotechnology and Biosciences has been characterized since its foundation in 1999 by its high multidisciplinarity and its ability to combine the issues and approaches of the Biological Sciences with those of Industrial Biotechnology, in order to generate advances in basic knowledge and scientific and technological innovation. This breadth of vision has always been an element of strength because over time it has allowed the development of broad and flexible skills and participation in a wide range of national and international research programmes, the development of wide-ranging educational activities and numerous interactions with the territory.

The Department includes 14 full professors, 38 associate professors, 39 assistant professor, 24 technicians/administrative and about 350 PhD students, post-docs and thesis students.

In 2018 the Department of Biotechnology and Biosciences received the qualification of Department of Excellence from the MIUR.

The teaching activities include the three-year degree courses in Biotechnology and Biological Sciences, with a planned number of 400 places. In addition to this, there are the Bachelor's degree courses in Industrial Biotechnology and Biological Sciences and the PhD course in Converging Technologies for Biomolecular Systems. Department lecturers also collaborate in the PhD courses in Geological and Environmental Chemistry, Translational and Molecular Medicine and Neuroscience at the Athenaeum.
