Abstract

Recent advances in the field of nanomedicine have shown that biomimicry strategies can be employed to improve targeting properties while simultaneously enabling nanocarriers with a biological identity to better interact with the surrounding microenvironment. Immune cells in particular employ membrane proteins to target inflamed vasculature, locally increase vascular permeability, extravasate across inflamed endothelium, and regulate local and systemic inflammation. Inspired by the physiology of immune cells, we developed a procedure to transfer leukocyte surface proteins onto nanoparticles and demonstrated their cross-talk with the endothelium and the different cells populating the microenvironment of target tissues.
