Abstract
Heart rhythm depends on cellular excitability and the coordinated generation and propagation of electrical impulses. Modulation of these processes is central to strategies for regulating cardiac function and arrhythmia management. This seminar will explore how light can influence cardiac bioelectricity through membrane-targeted molecular photoswitches, without genetic modification. Studies in isolated cardiomyocytes and engineered cardiac tissues will show how these compounds tune membrane potential, impulse conduction and reentrant activity, linking changes in membrane biophysical properties to tissue-level electrical dynamics.
