Abstract

Exactly ten years ago, one of the most dramatic outbreaks of the last century was starting in a small village in Guinea: the 2014–2016 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa. In 2 years, the Ebola virus infected more than 28 600 people, causing the death of 11 325. However, few years later in 2021, the resurgence of the EVD in Guinea had smaller impact than the previous outbreak. Something was changed in the meantime.
As an “outcome” of the 2014-2016 EVD outbreak, capacity building projects have started for diagnostic laboratories in risk areas for hemorrhagic viral diseases (VHFs). This reinforcement of capacity in country has strongly contributed in the last years in controlling the spread of several diseases, as EVD, Marburg virus disease and Lassa fever. An example like: “Sotto il guasto, vi è l’aggiusto”.
