Abstract

“Paper mills” are organisations that produce and sell fraudulent research articles for profit. The scale of the problem is a significant cause for alarm, with one recent study suggesting that a staggering 3% of articles in the fields of biology and medicine published in 2022 originated from paper mills. Furthermore, over 10,000 articles were retracted in 2023. In this seminar, I will discuss paper mills and some of the techniques they use to create fraudulent papers, including the use of image manipulation to generate plausible figures. I will also explore how developments in AI are creating new opportunities for paper mills (and new challenges for the research community).
