Cities are challenging environments for plants, bees, and other invertebrates. But what determines which species succeed, which struggle, and how they respond to urban life? In this talk, I will explore how urban environments shape biodiversity through a combination of social and environmental filters. Using taxonomic and trait-based approaches, I will analyse how these filters influence communities and individual organisms and examine strategies that help species survive and reproduce in cities. Drawing on the findings of previous studies, time permitting, I will outline an interdisciplinary project currently under way which aims to address some of the issues raised by those studies.
