Microorganisms can survive in drinking-water systems even when nutrients are scarce and disinfection is applied. Understanding how they adapt to these challenging environments is important for water safety. This seminar explores how a model mycobacterium responds to different phosphorus sources, an essential nutrient for life. Preliminary experiments revealed unexpected bacterial colony formation in the presence of phosphite after prolonged incubation, although the mechanism remains unknown. These findings raise new questions about microbial adaptation and survival in nutrient-limited environments and may help guide future strategies for improving drinking-water safety.
