The architecture of the nervous system provides the foundations of animal behaviour. Even though several molecular determinants of cell-type specification or synaptic specificity have been identified, a system-level understanding of the developmental and molecular mechanisms that lead to wiring specificity is still very incomplete. I will show how, by combining single-cell transcriptomics and connectomics data, we are tackling this question in the fruit fly that allows the unique opportunity to map developmental transcriptional dynamics to end-point neural circuits organisation.
