Background

Laura Russo is Assistant Professor at University of Milano-Bicocca, Adjunct Lecturer at National University of Ireland, Galway and Visiting Researcher at Cùram – Center for of Excellence of Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine -  Ireland.

Since 2019 LR is also President of AlumniBicocca, the association of Alumni from University of Milano-Bicocca. Her research experience dates to 2010, as PhD student in the BioOrganic research group of University of Milano-Bicocca, working on a multidisciplinary project exploiting glycoscience in the field of nano- and bio-materials for tissue engineering. In 2010 LR joined the research group of Prof. Julian R. Jones, at Imperial College of London, as Visiting Researcher, working on hybrid biomaterials for osteochondral tissue regeneration. From 2013 to 2015 she worked, as Post Doc Fellow, at University of Milano-Bicocca, where she was unit coordinator of a research project funded by Cariplo Foundation on smart biomaterials for organoid cell cultures for cardiac tissue engineering.

In October 2016 Dr. Russo awarded a SFI Starting Investigator Research Grant (SIRG) at Cùram, National University of Ireland - Galway – where she started her research as Principal Investigator on Glycofunctionalized hydrogels and biomaterials for tissue engineering applications and cell biology studies.

In March 2017 she came back at the University of Milano – Bicocca where she got a position of Assistant Professor in Organic Chemistry, and maintained the position of visiting researcher at Cùram, and was also appointed Adjunct Lecturer at the National University of Ireland – Galway (Dept of Chemistry).

Awards and Recognition:

-September 2017 Junior Research Award for Organic Chemistry in Life Science of the Italian Chemical Society for her scientific contribute on organic chemistry applied to biomedical and life science field.
-October 2018 XVI International Award Federichino 2018. Federico II Foundation di Jesi, Palermo and Goppinghen.
-October 2016 Recognition of Minister of State for Training, Skills and Innovation, John Halligan TD - as “next leaders of research in Ireland, shaping the research community both in Ireland and internationally”

Research interest

Research interests of Dr. Russo are focused on 3D smart glyco-biomaterials and nanomaterials for cell studies and regenerative medicine, on 3D printable materials for biomedical applications. In particular she worked on nano- and biomaterials functionalization using a wide range of materials (organic, inorganic, polymeric, natural and synthetic), and smart functionalized hydrogel for 3D cell cultures. Dr Russo has also expertise in manipulating complex biomolecules such as carbohydrates. Her research activity to date has allow to the design and set up of different chemoselective ligation strategies for the covalent immobilization of several carbohydrates and peptides of biological interest on nanomaterials for tissue engineering applications.
