CELLULAR RESPONSE TO DNA DAMAGE IN THE MITOTIC AND MEIOTIC CELL CYCLE
DNA lesions can arise accidentally or in a programmed manner during both mitotic and meiotic cell cycle. Their efficient repair is crucial in safeguarding genome integrity, whose maintenance involves branched signalling networks that delay cell cycle progression by the DNA damage checkpoints, activate DNA repair, induce chromatin reorganization and modulate telomere metabolism. Not surprisingly, defects in these networks result in a variety of diseases ranging from severe genetic disorders to cancer predisposition and accelerated aging. We use several complementary approaches in the yeast S. cerevisiae model system to unravel the molecular mechanisms and interconnections ensuring genome stability in the presence of DNA alterations.
