A great portion of animal diversity worldwide inhabits those landscapes devoted to food production. The socio-economic drivers which have been interesting European farmland areas in
the last decades are posing great risks to such delicate systems which have been remained in
equilibrium for millennia.
The theoretical aspects related to this issue will be discussed during the seminar by presenting three recent case studies regarding the Italian Alps agroecosystems. These will provide practical examples to better understand the conflicts (and possible solutions to mitigate them) among agroecosystem management, biodiversity and provisioning of ecosystem services.

This international event is organized as the final event within the European MSCA-ETN project TOLLerant (www.tollerant.eu) and it will focus on molecular aspects of microbiota-host interaction in health and disease.
The aim of this International meeting is to focus on the molecular mechanisms and interactions in health and disease conditions beyond infection, including sensitization, gut-brain communication, aging, cancer, chronic inflammation and autoimmunity.
Motivation for the selection of this topic is that despite a huge increase in genomic, proteomic and metabolomics data that allowed to relate microbiota composition to health and disease of different organs, the molecular mechanisms by which bacteria, viruses and fungi communicate with the host organism remain largely unknown.
In this context the key role is played by the Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs), including Toll-like Receptors (TLRs) but also intracellular NLRs and other receptors.

YOUNG RESEARCHERS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO PRESENT THEIR WORK AS FLASH/ORAL COMMUNICATION OR POSTER PRESENTATION.

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) disorders are a group of lysosomal storage diseases characterised by a deficiency or lack of the enzymes required to degrade glycosaminoglycans, including heparan sulfate (HS). This results in the accumulation of undegraded HS substrate within the lysosome, which leads to significant cell, tissue and organ damage with associated progressive physical and cognitive decline and a shortened lifespan. The affected organs include the heart, bones, joints, respiratory system and central nervous system. There are no cures for MPS disorders, although some treatments are available for a subset of these disorders, principally bone marrow transplant and enzyme replacement therapies. However, the latter are limited by their extraordinary cost and the fact that they are unable to cross the blood-brain barrier or penetrate into joints. In this presentation, I will describe our efforts to develop small molecule approaches to treatment: pharmacological chaperone therapy and substrate reduction therapy. I will also describe the development of a new LC-MS/MS assay for quantitation of HS in biological samples, which is useful for diagnosis and prognosis of MPS disorders and for monitoring the efficacy of new therapies.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Bio-based economy (Bioeconomy) aims to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and finite materials without overexploiting natural resources. According to the definition of the European Commission “Bioeconomy encompasses those parts of economy that use renewable biological resources from land and sea to produce food, biomaterials, bioenergy and bioproducts”. Behind bioeconomy there is much science related to industrial biotechnology as well as a deep change in economics, politics, and societal issues.

A new cross-sector expertise is therefore required. This summer school aims to provide a broad overview of the above-mentioned issues and will be held by national and international speakers, both from academia and from industry. At least one visit to a company involved in the production of bio-based compounds will be included in the school schedule. Because of its inter-disciplinarity, the program welcomes participants with different backgrounds. Participants should be aware that a basic knowledge of the scientific basis of biotechnology is required. Potential participants can ask organizers for advice.

Networking and discussion among students and lecturers will be encouraged and fostered throughout the duration of the school, with social events and a poster session.

CONTENTS
What’s new: Introduction to the scope, challenges and trends of bioeconomy. Local vs global: Choice and processing of renewable raw materials; environmental sustainability of biomass sourcing and processing. How to do it: Key technologies for the production of bio-based products. Biorefineries: concepts and application.
National and international strategies for bioeconomy: funding, organization, network.
Innovation in place: visit to a company and case studies of success (or failure) stories.
